The Orridi di Uriezzo: Magnificent Canyons to Visit in Piedmont
In the Verbano Cusio Ossola area, you can find the magnificent Orridi di Uriezzo. These are gorges located in the Antigorio Valley, formed by natural inlets created through the erosion of water from the streams of the ancient Toce Glacier, dating back 12,000 years. The gorges are characterized by cavities, narrow passages, and limited light, giving the area a cave-like atmosphere. The smooth and polished walls, diverse vegetation like mosses and ferns, and crystal-clear water further enhance its unique beauty.
The safe and accessible trail winds through 4 distinct gorges:
- The Southern Gorge, also known as the Tomb of Uriezzo, is marked by a sign and is considered the most fascinating of all. It features a flat path approximately 200 meters long and a depth ranging between 20 and 30 meters.
- The North-East Gorge, narrower than the first, is about 100 meters long and 10 meters deep.
- The Western Gorge offers a more complex route, recommended for experienced visitors.
- Finally, there is also the option to visit a fourth gorge, known as Vallaccia, located below the church of Baceno and accessible only via a staircase leading to a panoramic viewpoint.
The perfect time to enjoy this experience is between spring and summer, requiring only waterproof trekking shoes.
SUITABLE FOR EVERYONE
If you are planning to spend an alternative day with your family in the heart of unspoiled nature, this trail is perfect for you as it is also suitable for children when accompanied.
Trails Through the Orridi
The Orridi can be accessed through three trails: the first starts from Premia, passing by the Balmafredda rock, with a route beginning at the Santa Lucia oratory and leading to the North-East Gorge. Continuing along the path, you will reach the Southern Gorge, then the Toce River path, which crosses the Maiesso bridge and the Marmitte dei Giganti. Nearby, you can also admire the Eastern and Western Gorges.
The second trail begins from Baceno, 3 km from Premia, passing by the San Gaudenzio church and the Verampio hamlet, which provides easier access to the main gorge (Southern Gorge).
Finally, the last access point is from Verampio, starting at the Campagna restaurant-pizzeria, running alongside the Toce River, crossing the Maiesso bridge with views of the Marmitte dei Giganti, and continuing towards the trail that leads to the Southern Gorge.
The river flows gently, creating beautiful water mirrors. In some sections, you can also see small waterfalls. There is even a sandy beach where you can relax and enjoy the sun.
THE MARMITTE DEI GIGANTI
After the hike, at the end of your visit, you can take a moment to enjoy peace and tranquility in nature by stopping to admire the beauty of the Marmitte dei Giganti, rock formations and cavities created by erosion due to the force of flowing water and the retreat of ancient glaciers.
